Dear Matt Hancock,
We write to register our gravest disappointment at your Government’s timing of the decision to restrict family social gatherings. To announce such an important message on the eve of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important days of celebration in the Islamic calendar is very disconcerting.
The Muslim community has acted responsibly since the start of the outbreak. We have adhered, with discipline and resilience, to your Government’s guidelines throughout all the stages of the pandemic.
As you know, the Muslim community was unable to celebrate Eid al-Fitr earlier this year due to social distancing rules. Eid al-Adha should have been a time of celebration, relief and joy as we have all been through a very tough few months.
Muslim communities are on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19. We have disproportionately borne the brunt of pain and anguish during this pandemic. Yet we have responded with patience and fortitude throughout.
The Muslim community rightly believes that it is being unfairly targeted. As expected, there is a swell of frustration and anger across the length and breadth of the community.
